Apple Pie Fried in Beef Tallow
Fried Apple Pies are delicious when cooked in lard in a cast iron skillet. Our Southern Fried Apple Pies Recipe was absolutely scrumptious to taste but it FAILED in appearance and ease to cook.
FRIED APPLE PIES (FAIL)
When we were just youngsters in Corbin, KY we commonly enjoyed leftover fried apples in lots of dessert dishes. We loved those country Apple Pies, we called them Hand Pies. They rarely appeared picture-perfect, usually had split open, broken edges, and burnt spots. Well, the Senior Skillet expert cooks though we could produce beautiful ones, we were definitely no better than mom, granny, or aunt Marie. We've never had any success finding them out in the general public. We even tried the ones at the county fair… they were just greasy fried dough with canned pie filling and smothered in a cheap cinnamon sugar mix. We chose to include this recipe even though we deemed it as a FAIL. Hey, it's honestly a hot yummy treat… just not real pretty! My brother just added this line: "Isn't that what most women say about you… except for the hot yummy treat part?"
These Apple Pies are NOT beautiful, but they are delicious. This is a recipe your kids and grand-kids would love to help make and enjoy a few laughs at its appearance.
You honestly will enjoy making our Fried Apple Pies (FAIL) recipe, alone or with kids. It's a quick, tasty, but UGLY selection… enjoy!
INGREDIENTS We used for apple pies
- Lard
- Leftover Fried Apples – see recipe
- Refrigerated Pie Crust
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
How We Made our APPLE PIES (FAIL)
Heat lard in dutch oven to 375 degrees. Unroll and cut the refrigerated pie crust into quarters.
Place about 2 tablespoons of the leftover Fried Apples onto 1 side of each pie crust piece. Now dip your finger into water and run it along the edge of the crust and fold over to seal it. Use a fork to crimp down the pie edges.
Place the pie into the hot lard and cook for about 8 minutes. Carefully turn the pie over and cook the other side for about 3-4 minutes, until golden brown.
Combine and stir together the cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle each pie with a generous amount of the cinnamon sugar mix.
Please note that the pies kept sinking to the bottom of the dutch oven and creating scorched spots. A possible solution could be adding another pound of lard to the dutch oven. Another option might be fewer apples in each pie.
When you attempt this recipe, send us some pictures and notes about your success.
